Did you know?! Every day, your heart beats about 100,000 times, sending 2,000 gallons of blood surging through your body. That’s roughly half of what an average above ground pool holds in gallons! Although it’s no bigger than your fist, your heart has the mighty job of keeping blood flowing through the 60,000 miles of blood vessels that feed your organs and tissues. Which is amazing when you compare that to the circumference of the earth only being 24,900 miles. Your heart has to pump around the world almost 3 times every day!  Any damage to the heart or its valves can reduce that pumping power, forcing the heart to work harder just to keep up with the body’s demand for blood.

Why the fun facts about your heart? First, just another example of how awesome you are. Science has spoken! Second, 60,000 miles of blood vessels! If that doesn’t blow your mind you can just stop reading now!

The actual reason for these facts is to point out that there are too many things that we take for granted. Unless you were born premature or with a heart defect or rare condition you have never had to work at getting a heart. It has always been there, silently doing its job no matter what you decide to do that day. It works harder while you go on hikes and climb stairs, it bears fatigue when you don’t sleep well and when the stress of life piles up. Your heart is the best friend that you never realized you had!

Unfortunately, when we take things for granted there comes a moment of realization when we are truly sorry for not being more attentive, not caring more, not spending time on what is truly important. In the past these moments of clarity and reflection happened in the later years of life, the mind and body just can’t keep up any longer and the heart is just as aged as the body. However, today we are seeing a picture that is quite different. Young minds and bodies with overstressed and overworked hearts that are being pushed to the max. These hearts are failing way too soon and its due to the stresses of our current lifestyles.

I want to make things right with my best friend again so we can grow old together just like it was intended. How about you?
